A NEW MEMBER OF OUR CLASS: CORPORA
Hello explorers! It has been a while since I last posted here. I hope you are ready for a new experience that I will share with you right now. Have you heard about Corpus Based Language Pedagogy? If not, let me start from the beginning!
This task was given by our instructor of Current Issues in English course and I collaborated with Yunus Emre KOÇAK and Serra Mirac DEMİRKOL. We worked hard to generate in class activities that could integrate Corpus materials into an English language classroom. The guides that we followed were ASSURE lesson plan, Ma’s 4 design principles, the preparatory year syllabus and coursebook. The unit which we decided to use was unit 4: Family Life.
One of the subjects that is focused on is the house chores. And as we all know, memorizing the specific verbs for each house chore can be challenging for beginners. Accordingly, we came up with creating a worksheet including 4 different tasks. The first exercise aims to activate their prior knowledge with gap-fill tasks. In the second activity, they are required to search corpus related to verbs “make” and “do” (e.g. make a wish, do the laundry…) on the website Lextutor concordancer. This way they get the chance to see their uses in the given context so that they observe and analyse the language. In the third exercise learners try to discover language patterns they used in the previous exercise. Finally with the purpose of forming meaningful written output we want them to use collocations in at least 4 out of 5 examples in a short paragraph about their daily life. After that they check their uses of language utilizing peer and AI feedback. Additionally, we wanted to leave a part to share their reflections about the worksheet.
This worksheet holds a student-centered approach including different AI and corpora tools to maximize learning outcomes. Even though the worksheet has clear instructions, using corpora while learning a language might come with some disadvantages. Compared to generative artificial intelligence chatbots, you have to enter some adjustments to reach what exactly you are looking for. And that process might be confusing for beginners. As a result, it is our responsibility to facilitate their learning experience. You can find our lesson plan and worksheet below! Take care!
